I’ve Heard A Wonderful Place:蕭雅萱個展

The exhibition  I’ve Heard A Wonderful Place evokes an ideal realm that drifts between the living world and the beyond—a place that may exist within this life, or lie hidden deep within the afterlife. This name does not refer to a specific geography; rather, it points to a metaphysical imagination deeply embedded in human culture, a projection of longing toward an “elsewhere.” Whether envisioned as a paradise, a pure land of bliss, heaven, or landscapes of hell marked by suffering and trial, these realms together form humanity’s varied interpretations of places shaped by the unknown, the afterlife, and eternity.

This exhibition is an artistic practice that weaves together souvenirs, tourism, afterlife imaginaries, and liminal spaces. The artist likens life to a journey, at the end of which we arrive at a place that holds all memories and experiences—the “Soulvenir Shop.” This project begins with the crystal ball: it captures a specific moment while containing the continuity of time; it reflects a concrete site from our real world, yet summons imagined or fantastical scenes; it feels vaguely familiar while remaining estranging; it arises from both consciousness and the subconscious, opening a passage through which desire may be glimpsed.

Ya Hsuan Hsiao’s Website

2025年,她於倫敦67 York Street Gallery參展 A Thousand-Pointed Star。

Graduated from the Department of Painting at National Taiwan Normal University in 2020, and later completing her postgraduate studies in Fine Art at Goldsmiths, University of London, in 2024, Ya Hsuan Hsiao’s artistic practice centers on exploring folklore, afterlife imaginations, and landscapes of memory in East Asia.

Ya Hsuan’s works do not merely document what is “lost" but tenderly reimagine the possibilities of “returning" these lost elements. Ya Hsuan employs diverse media, including writing, photography, sculpture, and video. Her practice frequently draws upon objects and imagery of “soulvenirs" to evoke layered relationships between memory, experience, and place.
